We’re
pleased to present the following descriptions of PTO volunteer
opportunities available for the 2009–2010 school year,
and encourage your involvement in any and all that pique
your interest.
Study after study has emphasized that
parent involvement in a child’s school life is one
of the most crucial factors in achieving academic success.
With this in mind, we offer volunteer opportunities for
as little as one hour or one event to as much time and
energy as you can afford. Volunteering can take place at
school or in your home, on weekends or weekdays, during
the day or in the evening.

Description |
| Directory
Coordinator: |
(September–October): coordinate
information from forms returned by parents/guardians
to create a user friendly directory. Copy
and return to the school for distribution.
|
Cultural
Enrichment:
Joan Klemm,
Cristina Turnbull |
(ongoing):
work with the faculty and staff to help select programs
that enhance and augment the curriculum through performances,
presentations and work-shops across all disciplines. At least
one member attends monthly Arts Council meetings
to share ideas with enrichment coordinators throughout
the town.
|
Grant
Writing: |
(ongoing):
work with the PTO and school administration to search
out and apply for grants that will benefit the school. The PTO
is a 501 (c)(3) organization, making us eligible
to apply for programming grants, educational grants,
equipment grants, etc….If you have expertise
in this area please help us navigate this new possibility. |
Magic
Hat Thrift Shop:
Amy
Rowe |
(ongoing):
This fabulous “little
engine that could” of a shop has already brought
over $125,000 to the coffers of PTOs across Marblehead. Every
six months they distribute funds to the PTOs based
on the amount of volunteer hours they have accrued
in that time period. We need a few folks to
help coordinate volunteers during our weeks of coverage
at the shop, as well as people to work in the shop
sorting goods, hanging clothes and tagging items. Each
hour worked = $ for our school! They also
accept gently used items whenever they are open.
|
Speaker’s
Series:
Susan Hauck, Mari Goetz
|
(ongoing): coordinate with the guidance
staff and principal to determine which emerging issues
facing our student and parent populations most need
to be addressed. Seek out appropriate speakers
and presentations. Assist in scheduling and
promotion of events.
|
METCO
Host Family:
Lynne Tatirosian |
(ongoing): Open your heart and
your home to a Village School METCO student to allow
her/him the opportunity to participate in after school
activities, play dates, special events, etc…Get
to know the child’s family and act as a liaison
for the METCO parents to the Village School community.
|
Friends
of the Village School Library:
Leanne Torrie |
(ongoing):
offer an extra pair of hands to our wonderful librarian. Help
check-in and shelve books, assist students in finding
specific books, remind students of appropriate library
behavior and get to know a few of the students a
bit better along the way.
|
Box
Tops:
Nancy
Oliver |
(ongoing)
help coordinate collection of box tops throughout the
school. Create
contests that motivate students to remind parents
to send them in. These little 10 cent pieces
of paper really add up to a significant amount of “free” money
for the PTO.
|
Spirit
Wear: |
(ongoing)
students love the flannel pajama pants! We need someone to coordinate
the ordering and sale of these perennial favorites. |
Village
PTO Website:
Peter Schalck |
(ongoing)
maintain and update the Village PTO website, as well
as sending out enews postings and information updates
as necessary.
|
Book
Fairs:
Jill Dearborn, Lisa
Glass |
(twice
yearly): coordinate dates and site for the sale, assist
in set-up and break down of the display space, help
students with selections during the sale. It’s really fun watching
students choosing books to buy to take home.
|
Teacher/Staff
Appreciation Lunch: |
this year’s
much anticipated luncheon will be held on Tuesday
December 22nd after students are released for the
half day. We need a few people to coordinate
volunteers to cook/bake, donate goods, decorate,
set up, serve, and clean up once everyone has had
a chance to eat. This is a teacher/staff favorite
every year!
|
Fun
Night: |
work
with teachers and staff in planning a fun filled night
where parents and teachers create a safe evening of
fun for our students. What
a great thing to plan for a chilly winter night.
Past events have included pizza, dodge ball, crafts,
face painting, karaoke…Use your imagination
to see what you can come up with!
|
Movie
Night: |
plan
a movie night for the kids to get together to watch
a movie and hang with their friends. You’ll need to wrangle a few
parents as chaperones and the movie must meet with
principal’s approval.
|
Roller
Skating: |
set up a date on one of the early
December half days for our students to spend
the afternoon skating their cares away. Work
with skating rink to determine maximum capacity,
coordinate pre-sale of tickets and chaperones if
necessary.
|
Crosby’s
Tapes For Education: |
collect
receipts from all Crosby’s stores from September through
the end of March and tally up the amounts. We
receive one point for each $ spent. The points
are used to “purchase” much needed equipment
and supplies form a catalogue. More “free” stuff,
what could be better!
|
Art
Cards Fundraiser:
Cliff
Watkin |
this
is a brand new idea for us. Students will create works of art that
will then be reproduced onto note cards that can
be ordered by anyone from a catalogue that will go
home with each student in October. We need
volunteers to help collect permission forms, take
orders and then distribute them when they arrive
in December. They are sure to make fabulous
holiday gifts!
|
Meadow
Farms Fundraiser:
Julianne Sullivan
|
(September & October):
assist with the distribution of sales brochures, send
out reminders, collect completed order forms and payment,
and secure volunteers to help distribute orders when
they arrive.
|
Yankee
Candle:
Carolyn Coughlin, Donna Legget
|
(March/April): Coordinate with vendor
to organize the distribution of brochures to students,
send out reminders, collect completed order forms
and payment, and secure volunteers to help distribute
orders when they arrive.
|
EDU
Michael
Hanna
|

sessions during the year): would you like to
work with students for one hour a week for 10 weeks,
allowing them to have experiences that will challenge
and nurture their minds and bodies? If so, teaching
an EDU class is the perfect fit for you! Just
a few of the possible topics are: glass or ceramic
arts, knitting, theatre, dance, genealogy, philosophy,

your sign up information.
